Little else terrified me as a young boy quite so much as the annul physical. I still remember those ritualized and fearful visits made each Fall. My mother and I would start off from home, hand in hand, on our mile and a half trek across town, in what, at the time, seemed to me a reenactment of the Bataan Death March until we reached our destination: the town’s old and imposing Presbyterian Church whose basement housed the clinic. The ivy-clad brick facade looming menacingly above seemed to entirely engulf us as we descended into the dungeon below, my little legs trembling with every step deeper into the heart of beast’s belly. What dire and dastardly deeds awaiting me below could possibly cause such angst, but a solitary prick of the finger.
As much as I may have loathed those visits of my boyhood days, I have long since come to realize that periodical check-ups are indeed necessary and even beneficial in maintaining one’s good health. The same can be said of one’s life as a student. Progress Reports will soon be out and, while we all of course hope to see only the best, let’s remember that this is a time of check-up, a refocusing. Nothing is yet written in stone, no terminal prognosis made. Grade books remain wide open for the remainder of the quarter. So, rather than approaching this check-up with the trepidation of my boyhood, let’s be grateful for this academic doctor’s appointment, and together make any healthy adjustments that may be needed.
